Samuel Taylor Coleridge: Kubla Khan

Literature is an art that captivate everyone’s imagination. Art begin in one point and created large branch of ideas. Art is a product of symbols that influences and affects one or more of the senses and it encompasses a diverse range of human activities including literature.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge was an English poet, philosopher and literary critic. He is best known for his poems Kubla Khan and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The Kubla Khan was a poem which composed from a dream, it describe from the Tartar and the king Kublai Khan. Coleridge experienced opium influenced dream after reading a work. However, the poem was never completed because of the unwelcome visitor from “Porlock”. Having a dream that created a unique English poetry is one of the reasons why Kublai Khan was known. Even though the poem is not completed as the interruption caused him to forget the lines, Kubla Khan was kept for private readings and Coleridge completed the poem during autumn in 1797.

In Xanadu did Kubla Khan

A stately pleasure-dome decree:

Where Alph, the sacred river, ran

Through caverns measureless to man

Down to a sunless sea. (lines 1-5)

The above lines are the beginning of the poem which is a description of Khan’s Xanadu. It explain near the river Alph which passes through caverns before reaching a dead sea. You will know that in deepest meaning, the poem have many natural rhythm. 

Kublai Khan was the fifth great Khan of the Mongol Empire and the founder of Yuan Dynasty in East Asia, 1260 to 1294. It is believed that the poem is written in the power of the imagination and have an important component. Kubla Khan is a poem that celebrates creativity and the poet is explain how it is able to experience a connection to the universe through inspiration and reality.
